“Even if we sell the house, we still don’t come close to paying off the mortgage.” – Marge Simpson
“Hey.” – Homer and Marge Simpson

The Ann Arbor Review of Books is moving to its new, permanent headquarters at, starting this morning.  The new site is running instead of good old, which gives us a lot more functionality and flexibility, but does require a change of address.  If you are using an RSS feed to read this site, here is the new one:

Please e-mail me if you have any trouble with the feed or the new site.  On the whole it should be a vast improvement, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be problems along the way.  And now, the obligatory dated cultural reference:

BBC Breakfast Is Dead, Long Live Reading Digest   1 comment

“English, who needs that?  I’m never going to England.” – Homer Simpson

After messing around with it for a week and a half, I think BBC Breakfast works better in theory than it does in HTML.  However, this site needs a daily news post in the morning, so check back tomorrow at eight for the first post of Reading Digest: The Non-Simpsons Edition.  The Simpsons version of Reading Digest will, of course, continue back at Dead Homer Society.

BoxScoreCinema for “The Watch” Cancelled   Leave a comment

“Once again, I have failed.” – Horst

If there is one nice thing about having this site in “beta”, it’s that when events conspire against the lone, once weekly feature, there’s a built in excuse.  Barring further difficulties, BoxScoreCinema will be back next Friday.

In other news, Monday is the (tentatively) scheduled debut for our second recurring feature, a daily transcript/critique of the top stories on the BBC World Service’s Daily Commute podcast.  It will hopefully make it more than two posts before needing to take a vacation.

Spinoff!   Leave a comment

“Spinoff!  Is there any word more thrilling to the human soul?” – Troy McClure

Welcome to The Ann Arbor Review of Books (beta).  This site is a spinoff of the Dead Homer Society, a website two friends and I started as a way to help distinguish The Simpsons, one of the finest and most popular cultural institutions of our time, from Zombie Simpsons, the merchandising fueled franchise that is immune to widespread criticism about declining quality because it generates more than a billion ($1,000,000,000) dollars per year.  The Ann Arbor Review of Books aims to take that kind of criticism (skeptical, reality based, easily ignored) and apply it to modern commercial media generally.

As the word “beta” implies, The Ann Arbor Review of Books is very much a work in progress.  The plan is to launch full time (i.e. updating 7 days per week with multiple authors) toward the end of the summer with reviews of everything from books and television to radio, blogs, newspapers, magazines and the advertising that pays for all of them.  We’ll see how it goes.  In the meantime and starting today, this beta site will host the first versions of what will (hopefully) become recurring features.

Since this site is a direct offshoot of Dead Homer Society, it seems only natural that the first real post be Simpsons related.  To that end, check back at 4:00pm this Friday for a review of Ice Age 4 and the first theatrical Simpsons short, The Longest Daycare, both of which open July 13th.
